SHORELINE — It will be up to a fresh set of players to duplicate the success the Shorecrest girls tennis team experienced last season.
Graduation claimed nine seniors off a 12-4 Scots team that placed third in a tight Western Conference 4A South Division race that went down to the final match.
Three of Shorecrest’s top four singles players are gone as well as a doubles duo that advanced to the Northwest District tournament.
Junior Ashley Opdyke returns atop the singles ladder for the new-look Scots. Opdyke took over at No. 1 midway through her sophomore season and was an alternate for the district singles tournament.
“She’s been taking some lessons,” Shorecrest coach Barry Majorowicz said. “She’s going to be real competitive.”
Majorowicz expects to fill the remaining singles slots with a rotation of players who are close in skill level.
“After our first singles, it’s real even,” he said. “I’m looking forward to the season because I think there’s going to be a lot of movement back and forth.
“There were a couple of kids who played some doubles and they’re looking good this year. They’ve got to fill in a lot of spots.”
Juniors Annelise Owen and Gina Auriemma bounced around the doubles lineup last season and are joined by several varsity newcomers.
“We had a really good JV team,” Majorowicz said. “They’re very competitive. They know what it takes to win.”
And they realize the perks that come with maintaining a lighthearted atmosphere on and off the court.
“One of the big pluses is their attitude,” Majorowicz said. “The girls love being out here and they like having fun.”
