MILL CREEK
Shorecrest’s Alena Owen beat teammate Theresa Leigh in a friendly third-place match at the 3A Western Conference Crossover tournament May 11.
Owen swept Leigh 6-1, 6-4 in a match which only had seeding purposes since both players had qualified for districts in Mount Vernon May 17-19 already.
It’s the first time at the 3A District 1 tournament for both players.
“I’m going to have some tough competition,” said Owen, a junior.
Said Leigh, a senior: “I just want to see how far I can go. I want to see how I compare to the other competitors.”
Owen beat Sarah Barber of Everett 6-0, 6-1 but lost a marathon match to eventual champion Julie Mills of Everett 7-6 (7-1), 4-6, 7-5 in the semifinals.
She came back to beat Megan Graham of Arlington 6-0, 6-1 to get into the third-place match and earn a berth to districts.
Leigh beat Arlington’s Graham 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 but then lost to Meadowdale’s Stephanie Eli 7-5, 6-2. She bounced back to knock off Meadowdale’s Olivia Bates 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to earn a district spot.
In doubles, Shorecrest’s Kelsey Monson and Lauren Olson beat teammates Lexie Hinze and Natalie Simpson in the consolation round to earn a district slot. Last year, Hinze and Simpson beat Monson and Olson to earn a trip to districts.
Monson and Olson beat Meadowdale’s Sara Portesan and Lianne Fijalka 7-6 (10-9), 0-6, 6-0 for third place.
Hinze and Simpson won the fifth-place match to earn an alternate berth to districts.
