Annelise Owen and Ashley Opdyke remained unbeaten as doubles partners with three wins at last week’s Western Conference 3A tournament.
The Shorecrest juniors dropped one set en route to the doubles title and a ticket to this week’s Northwest District 3A championships in Bellingham.
Owen and Opdyke topped Lynnwood’s Sarah Tobin and Amanda Chomos 6-3, 6-4 in the May 13 championship match at Jackson High School to improve their record to 5-0.
“The girls thought early in the season that they would play doubles together during the postseason, but they wanted to play singles during most of the regular season,” Scots coach Barry Majorowicz said.
“When one of them goes through a tough patch where she is not playing well, the other raises her game to accommodate. That was true for both players during the tournament.”
After a 6-0, 6-0 opening-round rout, Owen and Opdyke outlasted Lynnwood’s Debbie Wong and Nhuchi Dao 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals.
The top three doubles teams and singles players from districts advance to state. Owen and Opdyke can lock up a state berth by winning their first two matches.
“Hopefully with a little more practice … they will move together more and work on being aggressive throughout the entire match,” Majorowicz said. “They played well and know that they will have to do even better to maintain the road to state.”
