Deborah Kirsner’s “Painting With A Lens” exhibition is a unique opportunity to see works by a master of this unusual photographic medium. Kindred Circle Art Gallery in Edmonds hosts her show now through Oct. 19.
The SX-70 Polaroid camera is the main tool. One of the first polaroids, it takes the type of film we all enjoyed watching develop right before our eyes. The magic occurs when a blunt instrument, such as a crochet hook, manipulates the emulsion. The image itself can’t be changed much. Rather, it enhances the images resulting in an effect that looks much more like a painting than a photograph.
It was love at first sight when Kirsner took her first class in this technique in scenic Hawaii. Completely smitten, she continued to work it and play with it. Now, nearly 10 years later, she has perfected an approach that results in works that cause great exclamations of surprise upon learning they are photographs. Capturing quiet scenes and moments of repose, her subject matter invites you inside to relax in the romantic mood.
Kindred Circle Art Gallery is located at 409 Main Street in downtown Edmonds. The gallery is open seven days a week. For hours and directions, visit the Web site at www.KindredCircle.com, where a preview of Kirsner’s works is also on display. For more information call 425-776-3778.
