Jack Pearce of the Rain City Flyers had a strong showing at the Junior Olympic Cross Country National Championship meet Dec. 13, finishing 29th in the Youth Boys (13- and 14-year-old) division.

Pearce, a 13-year-old from Brier, finished in 14 minutes, 5 seconds over the 4,000-meter (2.5-mile) course. He was fifth among 13-year-olds in the meet, and was the first runner from Washington state to finish.

The race was won by Cody Curtis of the North Idaho Track Club in a time of 12:54.

Pearce started quickly, working his way to 17th place and covered the relatively flat first mile in a swift 5:08.

The second mile of the course had more hills and included two challenging climbs, but Pearce held onto a top-20 position with a half-mile to go. He was passed by several 14-year-olds in the final half-mile, but held off four other runners in a sprint to the line to claim a top-30 finish.
