Peterson doesn’t flip-flop on ideas

After reading Diane Buckshnis’ denial that she had ever proposed parking meters in Edmonds, “At no time did I ever support parking meters in our retail areas” (Beacon), I did a little research. A quick search on the city Web site brought up Ms. Buckshnis’ application for the vacant city council position where she very clearly said that downtown should “consider installing parking meters, which would really upset local businesses, but could provide revenue to the City.”

Then, in the Enterprise, it was stated that Ms. Buckshnis did not propose parking meters but actually user fees at specific locations (Marina Beach, Off-Leash Area and Brackett’s Landing). So now Ms. Buckshnis wants both parking meters and user fees…?

We cannot even begin to evaluate her position because it keeps changing with the attention of the media. Use of parking meters and user fees will change the character of our town (can you picture the fence around Marina Beach Park and the fee kiosk by the beach at Brackett’s Landing?), as well as impact our ability to keep and bring quality businesses to town and generate tax revenues (more empty store fronts and drops in excise taxes paid to the city).

We’re facing a lot of tough issues in Edmonds, and I need someone on the city council that will be a straight shooter and won’t change their story … that person is Strom Peterson.
