MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Mountlake Terrace planning commission member Michelle Robles has announced she will run against longtime City Council member and current Mayor Pat Cordova this fall on the Mountlake Terrace City Council.
“I was born and raised in Mountlake Terrace. I have lived at the same address for 40 years, having inherited my childhood home upon my father’s death,” Robles said.
Robles said she has been active in the community through a variety of organizations.
She said she has been a life long member of the American Legion Auxiliary, a member of Rotary club, an honorary member of the Garden Club and soon to be a member of the Lions club.
“I have always enjoyed my work with the community and enjoy meeting new people and seeing old faces,” Robles said. “My reason for becoming active in the local political scene was the project known as Brightwater.”
She said she has spent the last 12-14 months working to keep this project from having a negative impact on Snohomish County and Mountlake Terrace in particular.
Ideally, she said, “this project will have no impact on either Mountlake Terrace or Snohomish County. I have attended many meetings to learn about the project and its impacts. I have looked at plant design, construction methods, impacts to the environment and the conveyance route,” among other things.
Her experience with Brightwater she said encouraged her decision to apply and serve on the Planning Commission in Mountlake Terrace.
“I have served for the last 10 months and have been involved in land use, comprehensive plan updates, and currently critical areas ordinances or environmental issues,” Robles said.
Robles said she has four goals she wants to achieve if elected to City Council.
•To encourage open and honest communication between council members, city staff and the citizens of Mountlake Terrace.
“I am an effective listener and want to make sure that if you talk with me, that you get an honest answer,” Robles said. “I will also strive to find the answers to a question for you. I will work to make council meetings a forum for open communications, while emphasizing the council’s need to work together to be effective and efficient in setting policy and goals for the city.”
•To protect parks, publicly owned open space and recreational facilities to maintain and enhance the character of the community.
•To work to develop economic policies that revitalize, encourage and enhance the business community through reasonable fees, and easier permitting processes.
•To strive to ensure a tax base that is made up of commercial, retail and residential mix such that seniors on fixed incomes and working families are not overburdened by taxes and fees.
Robles added, she has attended schools in Mountlake Terrace, graduating from Mountlake Terrace High in 1980 before going to school to work in the pharmacy industry. Robles currently works in the pharmacy at the Bartell Drugs store in Mountlake Terrace.
Robles said she decided to switch to retail pharmacy as opposed to a pharmacy in a hospital after she married her husband Ron in 1991, she said, and began raising his three children from his first marriage while also having her own three children.

As of the Enterprise deadline, the only people who have filed or announced they will run for the Mountlake Terrace City Council are Robles and Cordova, A.J. Housler, Laura Sonmore, Eric Teegarden and John Zambrano. The final day to file is Aug. 1.
