A standoff between police and a 48-year-old, knife-wielding Edmonds man ended in the man’s home Oct. 20 when a SWAT team used a Taser to subdue him in his bedroom.
The subject’s name was not release by police, but after he was subdued, he was taken into custody and transferred to Stevens Hospital for a mental health evaluation, police officials said.
No further information was available at press time.
The man’s mother contacted police around 11:44 a.m. after her son, who has a history of mental illness, started tearing up the house in the 9300 block of 220th Street SW, police said.
Shortly after alerting police, the man’s mother left the residence, because her son was becoming aggressive towards her and she no longer felt safe, a police press release said.
When Edmonds police officers arrived, the man had armed himself with a six-inch steak knife and repeatedly lunged at the officers, attempting to stab them, the release said.
Officers backed away and the subject barricaded himself in a room, the release said. Neighbors were evacuated from their homes, and the South Snohomish County SWAT team was called to respond.
A mental health professional was also called to assist, police officials said.
Because the man did not respond when police attempted to contact him, the SWAT team entered the home around 4 p.m., police said.
The SWAT team forced their way into the bedroom that the subject had barricaded himself in, and when the man continued to resist arrest, police officers tasered him.
No officers were injured in the arrest, and the man was not injured either, police said.
