A Port of Edmonds Security officer who noticed a lock had been cut off and gate opened in the dry- stack boat storage area east of Admiral Way helped foil the theft of five outboard motors
Port Security Officer Dennis Olson’s observation the evening of May 13 led to the discovery of outboard motors swiped from boats stored in the yard. They were lined up near the open gate, presumably awaiting the return of the suspected thief in a vehicle, according to information from the Edmonds Police Department.
The suspect, Ronald Carlson, 40, of Seattle, was stopped by a responding police officer who observed a suspicious vehicle leaving Port property. Carlson, who has a criminal history of 60 arrests and 39 convictions, was booked into Snohomish County Jail for second-degree burglary and five counts of attempted felony theft.
He was arraigned in Snohomish County Superior Court June 5 for second-degree burglary.
Chris Keuss, Port executive director, said there have been only a couple of reports over the past several years of motor thefts from the dry-stack storage. Occasionally, wet-moorage tenants report break-ins on boats and stolen property such as fishing rods, he added.
Pilfering of boats, Keuss said, likely originates from the water side as access to docks is through locked gates.
Although the Port maintains around-the-clock security, Keuss said additional measures such as light sensors and monitors will be considered.
