T-birds’ Vietmeier turns in top performance at Pasco

Shorewood senior Hannah Vietmeier finished third in the 3,200 meters at the Pasco Invite April 15, breaking her personal record by eight seconds with a time of 11 minutes, 26.89 seconds.

“She was extremely happy with herself and should be,” Shorewood track coach Howie Wood said.

Vietmeier kept a steady pace throughout the race, running splits that “were incredibly even,” Wood said. Vietmeier clocked in at 1:18 for the last lap.

Also placing at Pasco for the Shorewood girls was senior Kathryn Claus, who finished fourth in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 3 3/4 inches. Her mark was 1/4 inch short of her personal best.

Shorewood senior Lauren Sego took fifth in the javelin with a throw of 121 feet, 10 inches. Sego’s toss was her second-best this season and ranked second among 4A throwers at Pasco.

Sophomore Amanda Clark also had a strong meet, Wood said, running close to personal record times in the 100 and 200 meters and as anchor of the 400- and 800-meter relays.

Shorewood tied for 20th in the team standings with 20 points.

Shorecrest junior Cora Speidel placed fifth in the triple jump, breaking 36 feet for the first time with a personal record of 36 feet, 4 inches.

Scots’ junior Molly Gibson finished ninth in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 2 inches to tie her personal best. Also, senior April LaBrecque broke 50 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 49.75.

Shorecrest’s Acholonu impressive at Pasco Invite

Shorecrest senior Ikenna Acholonu medaled in four events to lead the Shorecrest boys to a seventh-place tie in the team standings at the Pasco Invite.

Acholonu finished third and broke his own school record with a time of 14.65 seconds in the 110-meter high hurdles. He also placed fifth in the triple jump with a personal best of 44 feet, 4 inches.

Acholonu, Jesse Hoffman, Derek Clemmons and Kevin Ramos teamed up to take third in the 400 relay with a season-best time of 43.45 seconds.

The Scots 1,600 meter relay team of Acholonu, Bo Rohrback, Clemmons and Hoffman came in seeded first, but finished sixth in 3 minutes, 29.05 seconds. Acholonu and Hoffman were competing in their fourth event of the day and fatigue was a factor in the team’s performance, Shorecrest coach Brandon Christensen said.

Hoffman tied his best leap of the year with a 22 feet, 4-inch mark in the long jump, which earned him third place. Christensen said he believes Hoffman could bust out a 23-foot jump by the district or state meet.

Everett outlasts Scots in 11

Everett’s Cory Mattson won a pitching duel with Shorecrest’s Emma Snow, 2-1 in 11 innings, in a Western Conference South Division game April 18 at Shorecrest.

Everett’s Alexandra Hudson knocked in the winning run in the top of the 11th on a fielder’s choice to second base.

Mattson struck out 12 batters en route to the victory. Not to be outdone, Snow of Shorecrest kept the Everett offense in check, striking out 10 batters.
