Shorewood water polo team takes third at state
The Shorewood girls water polo team beat Newport 12-4 to take third in the state championships held May 20 at the South Kitsap Pool in Port Orchard.
The Thunderbirds beat Roosevelt in the first round 11-6 and then lost to Bainbridge in the semifinals 14-7.
Shorewood, which took third at state last year, finished with an overall record of 13-3-1.
Shorewood’s Kaitlin Hartman was named to the all-tournament first team and Liliya Shtikel earned honorable mention recognition.
The T-birds compete in the Washington State Girls High School Water Polo Association’s Lewis Division.
Hartman also was named first team all-Lewis Division, Shtikel was named second team all-Lewis Division and Megan Ferris was named second team all-Lewis Division goalie.
Shorewood coach Brittany Hartman was named Coach of the Year for the division.
King’s Lyon wins district title
King’s senior Katie Lyon beat Blaine’s Tegan Burtkowski in a playoff May 17 at Avalon Golf Links to earn the top berth from 2A District 1 to the state tournament at Downriver Golf Course in Spokane.
Lyon shot a 36-hole score of 179 to tie Burtkowski before winning the playoff. King’s senior Kristin Sawtell shot a 184 to finish third and earn a state berth. The Knights finished second as a team behind Blaine.
On the boys side, King’s Jeff Neely earned a trip to the state tournament at Downriver, by shooting a two-round score of 156, one off the leader, Evan Needham of Meridian. The King’s boys finished fifth behind district champion Lakewood.
T-birds’ Mapalo in state draw
Shorewood senior singles player Nomar Mapalo, who placed second in the 4A District 1 tournament last fall, is slated to compete in the boys 4A state tournament at the Vancouver Tennis Center today, May 26.
Mapalo’s first match against Zach Jiganti, a sophomore at Bellarmine Prep, is scheduled for 10 a.m.
Tat, Jacobson play at state
Shorecrest’s Jonathan Tat, who won the 3A District 1 championship last fall and teammate Kevin Jacobson, who he beat for the title, are scheduled to compete in the state 3A boys singles championships at the University of Washington today, May 26.
Tat, a senior, will face Jake Knox of Hanford at 8:30 a.m. and Jacobson, also a senior, takes on Davis Mangham of Lakeside at 8:30 a.m.
Rasor, Weiford make state
Shoreline Christian junior Jeremy Rasor won the Tri-District B title in the 3,200 meters with a time of 10 minutes, 36.09 seconds to earn a return trip to the state meet in Cheney.
Senior Nathan Weiford finished fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 52.77 seconds to qualify for state as well.
Scots squelched at districts
Shorecrest singles player Roxanne Sharkey and the Scots’ doubles team of Lexie Hinze and Natalie Simpson were both eliminated from the 3A District 1 tournament after two matches.
Sharkey lost her opener, 7-5, 6-0 to a Lynden opponent and then was knocked out, 6-3, 6-0 by an opponent from Anacortes.
Simpson and Hinze lost 6-1, 6-3 in their opener to a team from Sehome before being eliminated 6-1, 6-3 by another team from Sehome.
