King’s girls stop Wildcats

The Archbishop Murphy girls basketball team gave the No. 1-ranked King’s Knights all they wanted and more in a Cascade Conference battle Jan. 6 at King’s High School.

Sara Mosiman and Sarah Strand both hit a set of free throws in the game’s final minute to help the Knights hold off a furious Wildcats rally and defeat Archbishop Murphy 53-47.

“They’re a very strong team; real solid,” said King’s coach Eric Rasmussen. “It was another classic battle between two good programs that went down to the wire.”

Trailing 48-35 late in the third quarter, Archbishop Murphy, behind five points from Lisa Coate, went on a 9-1 run to close within five points at 49-44. Coate finished with 11 points.

That’s as close as the Wildcats would get as the UW-bound Mosiman and Strand iced the win by going 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

Mosiman finished with 17 points and six rebounds and Strand scored eight of her 10 points in the final quarter.

King’s solidified its hold on first place in the conference with the win. The Knights beat Granite Falls 63-23 on Jan. 10 to run its record to 4-0 in the conference and 10-1 overall, Archbishop Murphy improved to 2-1 conference, 9-2 overall after a 50-47 win over South Whidbey Jan. 10.
