MacGeorge, Bugai advance to state
Two Shorewood gymnasts, junior Elle MacGeorge and sophomore Crystal Bugai, earned state berths at the Class 4A District 1 and 2 meet Feb. 11 at Sammamish High School.
MacGeorge, who qualified for the third consecutive year, made it in the vault, uneven bars and balance beam. She finished 11th in the vault with a score of 8.825, ninth in the bars with an 8.3 and eighth on the beam with an 8.825. Bugai scored an 8.025 on the bars and finished 11th to earn her first trip to state. The 4A state action begins at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Tacoma Dome.
Shorewood finished fifth as a team at the district meet. All gymnasts from the top two teams at districts advance to state, as do the top three gymnasts in the all-around competition not on those two teams and the next nine individuals who are not included in the previous two categories.
This is the 20th consecutive year Shorewood has had at least one gymnast qualify for state, head coach Susan Riley said.
Shorecrest did not qualify any gymnasts in the Class 3A District 1 and 2 meet.
Shorecrest boys win crossover
After it competed all season against the bigger Class 4A schools in the Western Conference South Division, the Shorecrest High School boys basketball team showed it can compete with other Class 3A schools.
The Scots jumped out to an early lead and defeated South Whidbey 41-26 to advance to the 3A District 1 tournament. South Whidbey, the No. 2 team out of the Cascade Conference, finished the season at 8-11 overall.
Shorecrest coach Brian Fischer said the trio of Ikenna Acholonu, Derek Clemmons and Mark Golike provided spark down low early on for the Scots.
“We jumped out on them early,” said Fischer, whose team led 15-5 after one quarter and 27-9 at halftime. “Mainly because we took it to them inside. We must have had around eight offensive rebounds in the first half.”
With the victory, Shorecrest (4-17) earned a shot against Lynden, the top seed in the double-elimination district tournament Wednesday, in a game played after Enterprise deadlines.
“It’s always tough to know where you’re at (competitively) playing in a 4A conference,” Fischer said. “It’s tough getting beat up all the time, but it gave us a reserved confidence heading into this game.”
King’s girls run table again
The King’s girls basketball team beat Lakewood 70-27 Feb. 10 to end their Cascade Conference season 12-0. With the win, seniors Sara Mosiman and Caitlyn Faidley completed a 48-0 run in Class 1A Chinook League and 2A Cascade Conference games.
The Knights will host Meridian in a Class 2A District 1 playoff game at 7 p.m. Feb. 22.
King’s boys win league title
Despite a loss in its regular season finale to Lakewood, the King’s boys basketball team won the Cascade Conference title with an 11-1 record and will host a first round Class 2A District 1 playoff game against the Whatcom League’s fourth-place team at 7 p.m. Feb. 21.
Four-game slide ends T-bird girls playoff hopes
The Shorewood girls basketball team’s playoff hopes were dashed by a four-game losing streak.
A 60-52 loss to Everett on Feb. 10 coupled with an Edmonds-Woodway win over Mountlake Terrace sank the T-birds’ shot at a Western Conference South Division playoff berth.
After a 43-35 loss Edmonds-Woodway, the T-birds’ fourth in row, Shorewood fell to 6-11 in the conference and 7-12 overall.
