DeKoekkoek earns league MVP

Shoreline Christian junior forward Julia DeKoekkoek, who averaged 16.6 points per game this season, was named Most Valuable Player of the Northwest A/B League.

Teammate Colleen Woods, a junior forward who averaged 14.6 points, earned first-team all-league honors along with DeKoekkoek.

Sophomore guard Ann Barrick and senior guard Kara Fertello both earned honorable mention recognition.

Head coach Stan De Yager, who led the Crusaders to the state Class B tournament for the second consecutive year, was named the league’s Coach of the Year.

On the boys’ side, senior guard Grant Brandal, who led the Crusaders in scoring, notched a spot on the all-league first team.

T-birds open with win over Scots

Chris Kearns’ solo home run to right field was the boost the Shorewood baseball team needed to beat Shorecrest 9-6 March 6 at Shorewood High School.

Kearns’ blast with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning off Shorecrest’s Sean Stuart broke a 5-5 tie and helped the T-birds secure the victory in their Western Conference South Division opener.

Shorewood added three insurance runs in the sixth on an RBI triple by Devin Whittle, RBI double by Jeremy Sage and RBI single by Mark Rockey.

Shorewood freshman Alex Kuniyoshi earned the win, allowing one run in three innings of relief. Kuniyoshi had runners in scoring position in each inning but was able to pitch out of jams.

Shorewood improved to 1-2 overall while Shorecrest dropped to 0-3.

Scots hold off T-birds in opener

The Shorecrest softball team hung on to beat Shorewood 5-3 March 21 in the Western Conference South Division opener for both teams.

Shorecrest catcher Sarah Berg went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a triple and Emma Snow went the distance to pick up the win.

The Scots took a 5-1 lead off Thunderbirds starter Kayla McCarthy, but Emily Davenport came on in the fifth inning and held the Scots in check. Shorewood’s Erica Ellersick, who is batting .667 this season, knocked in a pair of runs with a double in the sixth inning but the rally fell short.

Tseng, Hayden recognized

Senior basketball player Mary Tseng and sophomore swimmer Tyler Hayden were named athletes of the winter sports season at Shorecrest.

Tseng, a two-time first team all-league player, led the Scots in scoring with a 17.3 average. She also holds a 3.9 cumulative grade point average.

Hayden placed third in the 100-yard butterfly and sixth in the 200 freestyle at state, breaking a school record in the freestyle. He holds a 3.9 cumulative GPA.
