Oliver Cyrus’ “Papayas” will presented Monday, March 15 in the Aurora Room at the Shoreline Center as the next play in the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council’s Reader’s Theater Series.
Admission is free and the reading will be followed by discussion with the playwright and the actors.
A character collage, “Papayas” follows a dysfunctional family whose members cannot approve of one another and whose behaviors and beliefs are constantly at odds. Each character is looking for something and has expectations that are not likely to be fulfilled. Mom is lost in her own world made of delusion and fantasy. She pushes away one son and one daughter because she disapproves of their lifestyles and occupations. She adores and pampers her other son, who takes advantage of her adoration to spite his siblings. Religion and morality play a role in the mistakes this family makes in their convoluted rivalry and competition for Mom’s approval.
Cyrus attended the University of Montana, where he studied philosophy and English and the University of Washington, where he concentrated on creative writing and playwriting. His work experience ranges from employment with the Boeing Company, driving a Farwest Taxi and a sexton at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.
The Shoreline Center is located at 18560 First Ave. NE. in Shoreline. For more information call the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council at 206-417-4645.
