The American Red Cross is looking for everyday heroes from Snohomish County — people who’ve performed life-saving CPR, pulled someone from a burning building or put themselves in harms way to help others. Community members are asked to nominate these people so their service might be recognized. Heros will be honored at the Snohomish County Chapter’s 13th Annual Real Heroes Breakfast on Dec. 9 at Comcast Arena in Everett.
Each yea,r the Red Cross presents Real Hero awards in several categories, such as Fire, On the Job Rescue, Adult &Youth Good Samaritan.
The nominee must live or work in Snohomish County. The heroic act must have occurred since Oct. 6, 2007.

Join the Sons of Norway bowlers
The Bothell Sons of Norway bowling league is looking for bowlers and cheerleaders.
The league will meet at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays beginning Sept. 9 at Robin Hood Lanes in Edmonds. The league is open to the public. There are four members to a team and all teams are co-ed. Library to have early learning open house
The Mill Creek Library will host an early learning resources open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 20 in the children’s room.
The event will include stories and songs, hands-on activities and giveaways for children, demonstrations of library resources for early learning, information about the six essential pre-reading skills and information about other community resources related to early learning.
Similar early learning events will take place on Sept. 20 at all Sno-Isle libraries.
The events were organized by the Foundation for Early Learning, which partnered with libraries and other community organizations across the state to reach out to families and encourage early learning.
The first five years of life are believed critically important in helping children learn and grow, according to statistics offered by the foundation. The Early Learning Open Houses will help parents, caregivers, and interested residents learn about the many tools, books, and activities available, many times at little or no cost.

Book group seeks new friends
The Mill Creek Friends of the Library Evening Book Group invites the community to a book discussion at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18 at the Mill Creek Library. Roy DeSoto will lead the discussion about Anita Diamant’s “Red Tent.” The novel is based in biblical times and details the imagined lives of Rachel and Leah, two wives of Jacob and, subsequently, the imagined story of Dinah. Event to help victims of domestic violence
Several local restaurants are participating in the “Platters that Matter” event through Cocoon House and Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County on Sept. 9.
The event will raise money for programs and services to assist victims of domestic violence.
Each participating restaurant will offer a lunch or dinner special, with proceeds going to support Cocoon House and Domestic Violence Services.

City turns 25
Mill Creek will celebrate its 25th birthday beginning at 1 p.m. on Sept. 28 at City Hall.
Festivities include the sealing of a time capsule that will be opened in 2033 at the city’s 50th birthday, live entertainment from Elizabeth and Buck, refreshments and historical displays. For more information, call 425-745-1891.
Visit farmer’s market at Country Village
The Farmer’s Market at Country Village is open from noon to 6 p.m. on Fridays and will run through Sept. 26.
The market is located in the center parking lot of Country Village. The market features many locally grown fruits and vegetables, cut flowers, nuts, breads, berries, honey, and hand-crafted items.
Garden awards go to seven families
The Mill Creek Arts and Beautification Board selected seven families for the 2008 Great Garden Awards.
Board members toured the City and took pictures of noteworthy properties and used those pictures to vote to determine the year’s winners of the Great Garden Award.
Signs will be posted in each winner’s yard through the end of August. The winners also will be recognized by the City Council on Sept. 9. The winners are:

Rotary donates to Jackson dance team
The Mill Creek Rotary Club gave a $2,000 check to the Jackson High School Dance Team in support of the team’s planned appearance at the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl football game on December 30 in San Diego.
The JHS Dance Team was invited to the game in recognition of its outstanding reputation.
In addition to the Dance Team, the Mill Creek Rotary provides support to a number of student projects and activities including high school student of the month, student of the year Scholarships and the annual Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Seminar.
