SHORELINE — Maddox Grill closed for a good cause.

The restaurant, formerly located at 638 N.W. Richmond Beach Rd., closed March 20 and is scheduled to re-open in April at a new location in Lynnwood. The move, which will allow the restaurant to expand its somewhat small quarters, was necessitated after the owners of the property announced plans to tear down the 40-year-old building.

Maddox Grill, which specializes in seafood and steaks and is owned by Rick and Sue Maddox, has been open since 1988. The name of the restaurant will change slightly to Maddox Grill and Bar at the new location in Lynnwood, which is the former home of Baldy’s Burgers &Brew, 18411 Highway 99.

When Rick Maddox first learned in January that the property owner planned to tear down the building, his reaction was that it was time to get a “jump start” on finding a larger locale.

Maddox previously considered remodeling the existing building, but due to the age of the structure, he felt there were too many things that would have to be done.

The new Lynnwood location will be more than twice the size of the current building, and Maddox said a bar will be added and the menu offerings will similarly expand. The new menu has not yet been finalized, but will include some of the old favorites in addition to casual offerings. The new bar and menu will make the climate a bit more laid-back.

“It is going to be a much more casual atmosphere,” Maddox said. “We will have room for a bar, which we don’t have here.’

Employees began informing customers about the move three weeks in advance and Maddox said many customers have been excited about the move, while others are sad because they live or work nearby and stop by for lunch. Regardless, Maddox said several loyal customers made reservations for both lunch and dinner on the last day the Shoreline location was open for business.

Nathan McGowan, who has worked at the restaurant for more than seven years, said the majority of customers are excited to hear about the move and he expects a number of them will travel the distance to the new location.

“Most everybody who has eaten here will come up there at least once,” McGowan said.
