Register for kindergarten in Shoreline

Some Shoreline School District schools still have room in all-day kindergarten programs for 2008-09. They are: Briarcrest Elementary, Lake Forest Park Elementary and Syre Elementary. Families may register directly at the schools.

For half-day kindergarten, locals should register at their neighborhood school as soon as possible.

Einstein, SCC concert

French horn soloist and Shoreline High School alumnus John Troxel will be featured in a joint concert by the Einstein Middle School Wind Ensemble and the Shoreline Community College Concert Band at 7:30 p.m. May 20 at the Shorecrest Performing Arts Center.

Troxel is a master gunnery sergeant from “The President’s Own Marine Band” from Washington, D.C. He grew up in the Richmond Beach area and was a student of Shoreline Community Band director Ken Noreen and a classmate of Einstein Middle

School Band director Frank Halferty.

General admission is $7 and for students, it’s $5.

Shorewood business students win awards

Shorewood High School’s Future Business Leaders of America, or FBLA, team had several students qualify for nationals and placed in the top five in their events at the state competition recently.

The students independently studied for events of their choice, ranging from Cyber Security to Business Ethics.

The students who qualified for nationals have the chance to attend the FBLA National Competition at the end of June in Atlanta, Ga. Shorewood teacher Dan Noyes is the group’s adviser.

In team events, the top two places qualify for nationals. In individual events, the top three places qualify for nationals.

These Shorewood students placed in the state FBLA event:

Team Events – Network Design, fifth place, Matt Delaney, Paul Bartell; Entrepreneurship, second place, Wilfred Chan, Tim Tan; Entrepreneurship, fifth place, Alex Rattray, Dillon Iwasaki; Market Decision making, fifth place, Alex Rattray, Dillon Iwasaki.

Individual Events – Cyber Security, second place, Paul Bartell; Spreadsheet Applications, first place, Lucy Liu; Word Processing II, fifth place, Lucy Liu.

Shorewood student goes to competition

Frazier Mork, 16, a junior at Shorewood High School, is a finalist in the 2008 sanofi-aventis International BioGENEius Challenge, an annual competition for high school students who demonstrate an “exemplary” understanding of biotechnology through science research projects.

To qualify for the international competition, Mork won the local competition April 19 at Shoreline Community College. The international competition will be June 16-18 in San Diego, Calif.

SCC students win at DECA conference

Shoreline Community College business students won several awards recently at an international career development conference. Two business professors also won awards.

Members and advisors of college’s DECA club attended the 2008 International Career Development Conference April 12-15, 2008 in Atlanta, Ga.

The students participated in leadership and professional development activities and competed in events related to marketing and management.

Students Sandra Metz and Cassie Zieglar were national finalists in the Sports and Entertainment Marketing event; Binh Nguyen placed second in the Design Presentation event and David Lim and Alex Chan paired up for a third place finish in the International Marketing Event. Amanuel Yihdego earned a Certificate of Proficiency in the Entrepreneurship event and Yin Xu competed in the Marketing Management competition.

Professor Laura Portolese Dias received the Advisor of the Year award. Portolese Dias has served on the National Post-Secondary Council for the past two years, served as Washington’s Fall Leadership Conference coordinator for several years and has published two textbooks. Professor David Starr was awarded the Honorary Life Member award. Starr has been active in the group for over 25 years and has served in leadership roles at the local, state and national levels.
