The week began on a somber note, honoring the nearly 3,000 innocent Americans killed five years ago in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Speeches, moments of silence and lowering of flags honored the fallen during local commemorations. But did an interdenominational prayer gathering offset a show of Army weaponry at two separate events?

The disparity in reactions illustrates how the attackers turned American society on its axis. Those with forgiving natures seek peaceful solutions to global problems. On the other hand, brandishing weaponry indicates an unfearful nation, and possibly a desire for retribution.

Meantime, political strategists are busy trying to pin the blame on either Democrats or Republicans for not preventing the attacks.

The tragedy and aftermath of Sept. 11 must remain nonpolitical. It is not a time to demonstrate extreme feelings on either side of the political spectrum. Rather, on this infamous anniversary, honoring heroes, remembering the dead and reflecting on our place in the world will suffice.
