Lynnwood’s City Council will vote July 28 whether or not to approve the Recreation Center Renovation and Aquatic Expansion Concept for funding and to begin the construction process. The city of Lynnwood Parks &Recreation Board unanimously approved a resolution supporting the renovation and expansion, which was presented to the council on July 14.
The board believes this re-investment is important to our community because:
• The facility is 32 years old. Much of the building is worn out and inefficient. Our disabled population is currently unable to access key areas.
• It will allow the city to expand services for the next 20-30 years, to meet the needs of existing residents and an expanding population, and address changes and trends in recreation.
• It will provide a sense of civic pride, enhance property values and show that the city is willing to take care of a valuable asset.
• It will help us regain our competitive edge. The proposed renovation includes a second pool with fun amenities appealing to families with toddlers or teens; zero-depth entry (like a beach) appealing to seniors and disabled users; dedicated lap lanes for exercisers; and more capacity for physical therapy. New room for exercise classes, renovated locker rooms (i.e. family changing rooms), an enlarged workout area, and renovated multi-purpose rooms will keep current users and bring in new ones.
• Rising energy costs demand we replace outdated technology as we help keep residents at a local facility rather than driving elsewhere.
I urge you, before July 28, to phone (425-670-5010), mail (City Council, PO Box 5008, Lynnwood 98046), or comment online (www.ci.lynnwood.wa.us/egov/feedback) to Lynnwood’s City Council and urge them to approve the Recreation Center Renovation and Aquatic Expansion Concept for funding. It’s time to re-invest in one of Lynnwood’s most heavily used facilities.
