Four more residents have declared their candidacy for the Shoreline City Council 2005 election, for a total of eight in the game.
Open seats include positions 1, 3, 5 and 7 and are currently held by John Chang, Paul Grace, deputy mayor Scott Jepsen and mayor Ron Hansen. The positions are elected at large, for four-year terms.
An April 1 story reported that incumbent Grace, Keith McGlashan, Cindy Ryu and George Mauer had filed with the Public Disclosure Commission, which is required within two weeks of becoming a candidate. As of June 7, John Chang, Ron Hansen, Bonnie Mackey and Janet Way also filed with the PDC.
Chang, 47, who has served four years, said he has decided to run for another term after making a commitment to improve the city. He said the commitment he started is not finished, and he is obligated to his constituents to implement his vision for a better community.
“I haven’t swayed on comments and have a rational approach,” Chang said. ” I continue to be the voice for those hardworking taxpayers.”
Mayor Hansen, 65, said his decision to seek another term is based on the fact that his vision for the city has not yet come to fruition. Projects he hopes to see completed include the Aurora Corridor Project, the Interurban Trail and the North City Project.
“I want to make sure all three projects are done before I leave,” Hansen said. “When I am done I will be ready to leave.”
Way has not yet declared a position. A 17-year resident of Shoreline, she ran for the City Council in 2003 against Council member Bob Ransom.
Way advocates providing safe walkways for children walking to school, and is active in environmental issues. She leads the Shoreline Environmental Council and the Thornton Creek Legal Defense Fund.
“I have heard from all sides that the city is hard to work with,” Way stated in a news release. “I will work hard to reform the culture at City Hall and make the Council more responsive to concerns of citizens.”
Mackey could not be reached for comment. She also has not declared a position.
