Hello. It’s good to be back in Snohomish County after 25 years away in the northern reaches of Washington.

I’m the newly hired news editor for The Enterprise Newspapers. My job is to get to know your communities and get all the news you care about packed inside your community newspapers.

In the time I’ve been away, towns have grown into cities. People from different parts of the globe now call this area home.

I’ve experienced a little globe-trotting myself. I was visiting from England when I met my future husband. We owned and operated a variety of businesses in Seattle and Snohomish County. We even did a little farming, experiencing the funny, and sometimes hazardous experiences, of people with little agricultural knowledge but boundless enthusiasm for new adventures.

Three children and a career change later, I emerged from Western Washington University with a journalism degree. After some internships and short-term jobs, I landed at the Skagit Valley Herald. I spent 17 years working at the Mount Vernon newspaper office as a writer and editor. Those years passed quickly in the fast pace of handling breaking news. I’ve written about the joys and sorrows that affect people’s lives. And I’ve had some rare chances. For instance, I’ve flown with the Blue Angels, dropped from a helicopter onto an aircraft carrier and I’ve climbed mountains to cover fires and accidents. While these were exciting opportunities, the stories that interest me most are woven from the fabric of people’s lives. Topics can range from a key zoning change to a youngster winning an important award.

Now that I have returned to Snohomish County, I will bring my diverse experience and education to bear in serving Enterprise readers.

I am excited about joining a newspaper group that strives to accommodate reader’s interests and reflect the communities in which they live.

If you have ideas for stories you would like to appear in the newspapers, please call me at 425-673-6504 or send me an e-mail to mevitt@heraldnet.com.
