If you’re in the mood for some fruit — let’s just say strawberries — and just so happen to be looking for some local fun — let’s just say in Richmond Beach — then look no further.

The Richmond Beach Strawberry Festival, from noon- 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, may be a perfect match.

Sponsored by the Richmond Beach Community Association and city of Shoreline, the seventh- annual festival boasts a variety of entertainment, from food to music to games. The event is planned during the Richmond Beach Library’s art show, inside the library on Friday and Saturday.

This year’s food selection will include options from La Playa Mexican Restaurant, Hills’ Food, Wine and Catering, Sahara Pizza and Spin Alley. Richmond Beach Community Association members also will man a booth, where they will sell strawberry shortcake.

“We try to keep it very local,” said organizer Sheri Ashleman. “Local food vendors and local music, too.”

The music roster this year features five bands, each of which will play for 45 minutes. The bands are Folk Voice, Ek Balaam, Hijack Mary, Jimmy Free Friends and Briar Rose.

Other attractions include a walking tour of historic Richmond Beach, hosted by the Shoreline Historical Museum. There will be kids’ events offered, including art, face painting and games.

There also will be a photography exhibit; Shorewood students were invited to submit photographs, with the selected photographer receiving a $200 scholarship.

And, it may be of interest to know that the festival’s name originated not because strawberry shortcake is sold, but because Richmond Beach used to be comprised of strawberry fields.

When organizers of the event decided to plan a yearly gathering with food and music, someone suggested they revived the “old strawberry theme,” said Ashleman.

“That’s why we serve strawberry shortcake,” Ashleman said, “even though it’s not even strawberry season.”
