The Shoreline Breakfast Rotary Club recently provided an $1,100 safety helmet grant to the Shoreline Fire Department.
In an effort to assure that no child goes without a safety helmet because of cost, Shoreline Fire will provide a safety helmet free of charge to eligible children through a cooperative program with Shoreline Public Schools and several family services agencies in Shoreline.
“We are thrilled with the generosity of the Shoreline Breakfast Rotary and Rotary International for this commitment to public safety,” said Fire Chief Ron Mehlert. “Our Community Education Division will work closely with family advocates, school nurses and other referral agencies to see that every child who needs a safety helmet will get one — regardless of ability to pay.”
The Shoreline Fire Department already provides low cost safety helmets to the public in an effort to prevent head injuries among youth. The program is funded in part by King County Emergency Medical Services and the State Trauma Council.
“The Rotary grant simply gives us the ability to support more children and families in our area, and to assure that all children are protected when riding bikes, skateboards, scooters, and rollerblading,” Mehlert said.
As an additional reward this summer, the Breakfast Rotary grant will provide free helmets to all Shoreline youths who sign up for Department of Parks and Recreation skateboard lessons at the new skate park.
