SHORELINE — Lynnwood senior Caitlin Bonney earned her fourth consecutive trip to state in the 300-meter hurdles but was edged at the finish line by Elizabeth Mattila of Ferndale in the 3A District 1 Track and Field Championships at Shoreline Stadium, May 19.

“I came in here hoping to win,” said Bonney, who was second at state last year. “I guess I wasn’t prepared.”

“Elizabeth’s a really good hurdler,” Bonney added. “She’s always given me competition in this race. I’m really happy for her.”

Bonney came back to anchor the Royals winning 1,600-meter relay team that included Mariya Golonko, Amanda Overdick and Abriana Hill. They finished in 4:04.17.

Sophomore Kaytlyn Dill set a school record in the 100 hurdles, snagging the third and final spot to state with a time of 15.97.

Golonko, a senior, qualified in two individual events, the triple jump (third, 34-11) and 400 (third, 1:00.32).

Overdick earned a state berth with a third-place finish in the high jump (5-0).

Dill also scored for the girls in the 300 hurdles, finishing fifth in 47.26. The Royals 400 relay finished sixth (52.86).

Lynnwood finished eighth out of 12 teams with 52.5 points. Ferndale won the district title with 112.5 points.

On the boys side, senior Tim Carrithers earned his third state berth in the 400 (second, 51.19) and also qualified in the 200 (third, 23.37).

“I’m hoping to place (at state),” he said. “I don’t care if it’s eighth. That’s the goal.”

Carrithers also finished fifth in the long jump with a leap of 20-61/4.

“He’s worked so hard,” Lynnwood coach Duane Lewis said. “Track has been his second life.”

Also scoring for the Lynnwood boys were: Raid Ragih (sixth, javelin, 144-9); Derek Strong (seventh, javelin, 142-4); and the 1,600 relay (eighth, 3:35.93).

Lynnwood finished 10th in team points with 26. Burlington-Edison won with 124 points.
