Lynnwood guards Abriana Hill and Kari Hella combined for 21 points in the Royals’ 53-50 come-from-behind victory over rival Mountlake Terrace on Jan. 13.
The Royals avenged a 50-43 loss earlier in the season to the Hawks and improved to 3-10 overall and 3-6 in the Western Conference South Division. They’ve won three of their past eight games. Lynnwood plays Shorewood at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18 at Shorewood.
“This was a great victory for us,” Lynnwood coach Everett Edwards said. “I am very proud of the way we kept fighting back. We knew it would be a tough game because this has become such a great rivalry with Terrace.”
Abriana Hill and sophomore guard Laycee Hill scored back-to-back three-point baskets late in the third quarter, helping the Royals outscore Mountlake Terrace 12-6 and ending the quarter with the score tied at 33.
With 4:09 remaining in the fourth quarter and the score tied at 38, the Royals stunned the Hawks by going on an 11-2 tear. The charge lasted nearly three minutes.
Kari Hella, a 5-foot-9 sophomore, gave the Royals their first lead of the game by knocking in a 12-foot, baseline shot to give the Royals a 40-38 lead. Hella finished with 12 points. After surrendering a pair of Mountlake Terrace free throws, the Royals went on to score eight unanswered points, five of which came from Abriana Hill, to take a 47-39 lead. Lynnwood eventually built a 49-40 lead with 1:51 remaining. However, the Hawks, thanks to three consecutive Lynnwood turnovers and clutch free-throw shooting, narrowed the deficit to three points with less than a minute remaining.
Mountlake Terrace’s Emma Fritz led all scorers with 17 points and Corrine Pingul added 12 points for the Hawks. Mountlake Terrace loss its eighth consecutive game and dropped to 2-11 overall and 2-7 in league. The Hawks host Kamiak at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18.
