MC suspect arrested after pursuit

A suspect is in the hospital after a vehicle pursuit the morning of Nov. 16 beginning in Mill Creek and ending after the suspect jumped a median and crashed into a freight truck.

The suspect is being treated at a Seattle hospital for minor injuries. He’s expected to be released Nov. 16 and booked into the Snohomish County Jail for eluding, and possibly for vehicular assault involving a sheriff’s deputy’s patrol car and other potential booking charges.

The suspect is known to law enforcement and believed to be responsible for some burglaries in the Snohomish County and Eastside areas.

The suspect vehicle in the pursuit – a 4-door Subaru – was stolen. Mill Creek Police pursued it first, then terminated.

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office got involved near 148th Street SE and Seattle Hill Road (just east of Mill Creek) when a deputy spotted the Subaru and tried to stop it.

The pursuit went along 128th Street SW and later 164th Street SW in the Lynnwood area before the suspect got on I-5 headed southbound. Before getting on I-5, the suspect tried to hit a sheriff’s deputy’s patrol car; the deputy took evasive actions so there was only minor damage to the patrol car and no injuries to the deputy.

Washington State Patrol also was involved in the pursuit.

Just south of Northgate the suspect crossed the median and went into the northbound lanes where he struck a small freight truck. There were no serious injuries reported to the driver of the freight truck. The suspect suffered some facial cuts.

Fires in Edmonds, MLT keep crews busy

Snohomish County Fire District 1 crews had a busy morning Nov. 14 as they responded to two structure fires in a two-hour period.

Fire investigators from FD1 and the Snohomish County Fire Marshals are still working to determine how the fires started.

The first fire was reported at 8:30 a.m. in a large detached garage at an Edmonds home in the 22700 block of 82nd Avenue West.

Firefighters brought the fire under control. Damage to the 1,200-square-foot, three-car garage is estimated to total more than $50,000. There were no cars inside the garage, but several power tools were destroyed. No one was inside the garage when the fire broke out and there were no injuries.

At 10:15 a.m., FD1 crews were dispatched to a fire in Mountlake Terrace in the 22500 block of 56th Avenue West. Smoke was coming from all windows of the single-story house when firefighters arrived. The house is for sale and was empty. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to one room, but there was heavy smoke damage throughout the house.

Damage is estimated at $12,000. No one was injured.

Candle sparks fire

An unattended candle sparked a fire that caused more than $35,000 damage to a Mountlake Terrace duplex Nov. 10 and displaced the two men that lived there.

A neighbor called 911 reporting the fire in the 21200 block of 58th Ave. W. The neighbor then pounded on the doors of both units to alert residents to the fire. No one was home in the unit that was on fire, but the knocking woke a couple and a young child in the adjoining unit. They safely exited their home and there were no injuries.

When firefighters arrived, the duplex’s windows were black from smoke and flames were visible in one room, according to Leslie Hynes, FD1 public information officer. FD1 and Lynnwood Fire crews had the blaze under control in about 10 minutes. The neighboring unit of the duplex was not damaged by the fire and the residents were able to return to their home after firefighters cleared away the smoke.

Fire District 1 offers these safety tips for candle use:

• Blow out all candles when you leave the room or go to bed. Avoid the use of candles in the bedroom and other areas where people may fall asleep.

• Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn.

• Use candle holders that are sturdy, and won’t tip over easily and put candle holders on a sturdy, uncluttered surface.

• Light candles carefully. Keep your hair and any loose clothing away from the flame.

• Don’t burn a candle all the way down — put it out before it gets too close to the holder or container.

• Never use a candle if oxygen is used in the home.

Patrols nab 22

Snohomish County law enforcement took 22 impaired drivers out from behind the wheel Oct. 30 during the Surround the Sound patrols.

“That is 22 too many,” said Tracy McMillan, manager of the Snohomish County DUI &Target Zero Task Force. “We would prefer drivers find a safer way home than driving themselves when impaired.”

During the eight-hour emphasis, patrols contacted 325 drivers. Removing the 22 impaired drivers means that approximately one out of every 15 drivers may be impaired and arrested.

Snohomish County Sheriff deputies, Washington State Patrol and other agencies including Lynnwood Police participated.
