Jewelry heist thwarted

Edmonds Police were dispatched to Cline Custom Jewelers, 23600 block Highway 99, on May 5 on the report of a robbery in progress. Employees said a man entered the store and displayed a handgun that was tucked into his waistband and demanded jewelry. The suspect fled the store on foot with jewelry of an undisclosed value.

An Edmonds officer was on-scene within two minutes and apprehended the suspect as he fled westbound toward Edmonds Way. The suspect was taken into custody without incident. The handgun was found to be a toy gun. The stolen jewelry was recovered at the scene of his arrest.

During the investigation, a suspicious package was located within the store that was believed to have been left behind by the robbery suspect. As a precaution the neighboring stores were evacuated and a bomb disposal technician was called in to examine and dispose of the package.

The man was arrested for robbery and malicious placement.
