SCC graduation this weekend

The graduation ceremony for Shoreline Community College will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 8, in the college gym. This year, 50 students will be recognized as President’s Scholars, with a GPA of 3.9 or higher.

Student Body President Andrew Ivanhoe will receive the 2008 Student Service Award for his service to the college. Mela Erickson, Giao Tran, Grace Ekaputri, Jonathan Lavigne, Lucas Meserve and Jessica Puckett will receive Certificates of Appreciation.

Peter Schmidt will give this year’s guest commencement address. He graduated from the college in 1980 and transferred to Seattle University. He is now the Senior Associate Dean of Student Success and Retention at Edmonds Community College.

Erin Kvande will give this year’s student address. Kvande will attend Mount Holyoke next fall and plans to go on to law school. American Sign Language professor Richard Jacobs will give this year’s faculty address. Vice President for Academic Affairs John Backes will present Professor Emeritus awards to professors Andrea Rye and Kathleen Lynch.

The Shoreline Concert Band, conducted by Ken Noreen, will perform the processional, national anthem and recessional. Attendance is by ticket only.

Shorewood newspaper honored

The Kolus, Shorewood High School’s student newspaper, took second place at the Western Washington Excellence in Journalism awards sponsored by the local chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, or SPJ.

This is the only high school award given by SPJ. The students were judged on three topics and received perfect scores in editorial content and opinion/editorial.

Shorewood students win scholarships

Manjot Kaur, Taylor Hartman and Mayuri Reddi, all Shorewood High School students, have won 2008 Gift of Giving scholarships.

Each year the foundation gives four $5,000 scholarships to Shoreline students who have shown exemplary community service.

Shorewood junior wins at fair

Frazier Mork, Shorewood High School junior, recently won second prize in the category of biotechnology at the Washington State Science and Engineering Fair.

SCC hires new administrators

Four people have been hired in administrative positions at Shoreline Community College.

Tonya Drake will be the new Vice President for Student Success. She is currently District Director of Student Affairs for the Maricopa County Community College District, in Phoenix, Ariz. Drake will start July 1.

Bill Sperling will be the new director of ABE/ESL/GED. He is currently Workforce Education Manager at Cascadia Community College, in Bothell. In Shoreline, Sperling will be in charge of the Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language and General Education Development programs. He will start July 1.

Ritva Manchester will be the Director of Annual Giving, Community and Alumni Relations. Manchester is now Interim Director of the Shoreline Community College Foundation. The direct appointment by SCC President Lee Lambert is part of an organizational restructuring that puts the Foundation and the Public Information Office into the newly formed Office of College Advancement.

Stephen Smith is new vice president for human resources and legal affairs.

Smith is currently human resources liability prevention manager for the state Department of Labor and Industries. He will succeed Jim Tuttle, who had served as Interim Special Assistant to the President for Human Resources, July 1.
