Youth Challenge deadline extended

The Youth Challenge Awards Committee of the Lynnwood Rotary Club has extended the deadline in its search for seventh- through 12th-grade Snohomish County students who deserve to be recognized.

Award categories include community service, courage, creativity, environmental service, inspiration, leadership or group award. The deadline for nominations is today, April 7. Download a nomination form or complete the online nomination at www.youthchallengeawards.com.

Driftwood Players offer scholarships

The nonprofit Edmonds Driftwood Players will award scholarships of $500 or more to graduating high school seniors who live in or attend school in South Snohomish and Northwest King counties.

Students must have demonstrated talent in performance or technical theatre arts and plan to continue studying theatre arts in college.

Submit: names, address and phone numbers of applicants and parents; names of high school and counselor; list of high school and extracurricular activities, awards and honors; intended college for fall 2010; letter of recommendation from theatre teacher or mentor; a 300-word essay on interest in theatre and college plans; current transcript; and dates of high school awards ceremonies.

Horticulture scholarship available

The Alderwood Garden Club is offering two scholarships, a $1,000 scholarship and the $500 Floy Poe Memorial Scholarship, to students studying or planning to study in a horticulture program.

Applicants must be graduating seniors in an Edmonds School District high school or currently attending Edmonds Community College. Applications are available in high school counseling offices and the EdCC Horticulture Department. Deadline is April 30.

Veterans group offers scholarship

Applications for the $250 Robert L. Hunt Scholarship from the Disabled American Veterans Martin T. Sofie Sunshine Chapter 13 are due April 30.

High school seniors who are the child, stepchild or grandchild of a veteran injured through military service are invited to submit a 250- to 400-word essay on “What Memorial Day Means to Me.”

Submit essays, with names, addresses and phone numbers of applicants and sponsors, to DAV Sofie Sunshine Ch 13, c/o Scholarship Committee, 14609 Meadow Road, Lynnwood, WA 98087.

Ethics essay could net $5,000 for college

High school seniors can compete for a $5,000 scholarship in the nationwide “Excellence through Ethics” essay contest sponsored by Junior Achievement and Deloitte.

Essays must be no more than 500 words and respond to an ethical dilemma posted at www.ja.org.

Entries can be submitted online. Deadline is April 30.

Nominate teachers for Golden Apple

The public can submit nominations for outstanding educators – teachers, administrators, school staff, volunteers, programs and local businesses – to KCTS 9’s Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Education.

Call for young artists

Student artists, including home-schooled students, in elementary through high school who live within the Edmonds School District are invited to submit their art for consideration in the Student Exhibit of the Edmonds Arts Festival, to be held June 18-20.

Open class entries will be received and photographed April 30 and May 1 at the Edmonds School District office, 20420 68th Ave., Lynnwood.

Garden Club offers scholarship

The Floretum Garden Club of Edmonds is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating high school senior, community college student or other individual planning a horticultural career.

Applicants must show an interest in horticulture, floral design, landscape design, botany, forestry or a related field. Financial need is a requirement, as well as a grade-point average of 3.25 or higher. Students must plan to attend a two-year or four-year institution in state.

School seeks help with contest

Parents and other supporters of Meadowdale Middle School in Edmonds are invited to take an online quiz on being a responsible sports parent or coach, putting the school in the running to win one of six $5,000 youth sports grants.

The Liberty Mutual Responsible Sports course and 10-question quiz takes about 10 minutes and can be found at www.responsiblesports.com. Click on “Community Grants” from the menu, then “New School Grants” and the “Start here” link.

If the school gets enough people participating, it could use the money to buy health and fitness textbooks and sports equipment.

The deadline is May 31.

Sewers your thing? Scholarship available

Students planning to pursue a career in the sewer or water industry are invited to apply for a scholarship from the Washington Association of Sewer and Water Districts.

Applicants are encouraged, but not required, to be sponsored by their local sewer or water district.

Scholarships generally are for $500 or $1,000. The deadline is June 1.
