The Shoreline School Board approved a self-funded project that will provide the district with new energy-efficient capital improvements at its Feb. 7 meeting.

The project includes lighting upgrades, garbage management improvements, water conservation upgrades and boiler replacements at Shorewood High, Kellogg Middle, Einstein Middle and North City Elementary schools.

Devices that automatically turn off refrigerated vending machines when no one is around, as well as other improvements, will also be installed, according to representatives of Ameresco, Inc., the energy-savings company overseeing the project.

“This project is win-win for us, and it’s win-win for our students,” Flemming said.

It will improve the learning environment at schools, and it will demonstrate good environmental stewardship, Flemming said.

The $4.07 million project will be paid for with utility rebates, annual savings and savings generated during construction, officials said.

The energy savings are guaranteed by Ameresco, making the project risk-free for the district, district comptroller Paul Flemming told the school board at its Jan. 24 meeting.

Improvements should begin within the next couple of weeks for lighting and vending machine device installations, Flemming said. Other larger components, including boiler replacements, will be installed during the summer.
