Donations needed for Jackson High scholarships

Each year, the Jackson High School PTSA awards scholarships to graduating seniors who will attend a four-year university, community college, vocational or technical school. It is asking for donations from parents and local businesses to give scholarships to as many students as possible. Donations are tax deductible.

Contributors should send in their donations by April 6. Mail checks payable to: JHS PTSA Scholarship Program, 1508 136th St. SE, Mill Creek, WA 98012

For information, contact Wanda Lehman at wlehmanpta@

juno.com.

Jackson parents can view Wolftracks online

Wolftracks, Jackson High School’s PTSA Newsletter, is online at http://cms.everett.k12.

wa.us/jacksonhigh, on the Jackson High School Web page under “Publications.”

Because of the cost, the PTSA can no longer mail them to homes. The group has decided to mail a March newsletter to parents to get the word out about happenings there.

Parents needed to help with language night

The Gateway PTSA and Heatherwood PTA would like to bring a PTA World Language Learning Night to Gateway the night of March 6 if there is enough parent interest.

The PTSAs helped bring world language classes to the schools this year. They were offered in a before-school format at both schools.

The language night would be a chance for all Everett School District students and parents from elementary and middle schools to take a mini course in Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Spanish and maybe other languages as well.

This could help students and parents decide on what course they would like to enroll in the following fall. This idea is modeled after the University of Washington World Language Day for high school students.

Interested parents should contact the Gateway Middle School PTSA by sending an e-mail to GuardiansPTSA@comcast.net.

Classroom Grants awarded by foundation

The Everett Public Schools Foundation recently awarded 48 classroom grants to teachers in the Everett School District. Seven volunteer board members reviewed 72 grant applications from teachers throughout the district.

Classroom Grants are innovative teaching projects not funded by state or levy dollars.

JHS students named scholar-athletes

Six students from the Everett School District’s three high schools have been named this season’s scholar-athletes.

Jackson High School recipients of the winter 2006-07 award are:

• Matt Heneghan, who plays basketball. Heneghan has a 3.75 GPA. He has played basketball all four years and is a two-year letterman. In addition, he played football this year and ran cross country as a freshman. As a junior, he was a member of the school’s Junior Congress. He volunteers at the South County Senior Center.

• Danielle Peterson is captain of the dance team. Peterson is a senior with a 4.0 GPA. She has been a member of the dance team for four years. She also has been involved in school activities as a member of the Leaders of the Pack for two years and as a member of National Honor Society for three years.

As a junior, Danielle served as a sports medicine intern with the high school and the Donaldson Clinic. She is a member of the JHS band and percussion ensemble.

The award, started in 2005, recognizes student athletes who may not be stars in competition but who exhibit greatness in their classrooms and communities. Students earning the award have a minimum 3.2 GPA and participate at the varsity level. Coaches nominate students to each school’s athletic director; each school’s administrative team selects the scholar-athletes. One male and one female student-athlete are selected by each school each sports season.
