Shorewood principal to retire in June

John Green, principal of Shorewood High School since 2001, has announced his retirement, effective at the end of this school year in June.

Green, 55, will complete his 30th year in public education this year. Prior to joining Shorewood six years ago, Green was principal of Cascade High School in Everett for three years.

He previously served three years as an assistant principal at Jackson High School with Everett. Before that, Green served in the Vashon Island Public Schools as a math and science teacher, assistant principal and then as principal of Vashon High School. He began his teaching career in the Tahoma and White Salmon school districts.

Green hopes to continue to work in education, and he and his wife, Julie, are looking forward to spending time with their first grandchild, according to a press release.

The district will begin a search for Green’s successor immediately, and will involve all segments of the Shorewood community in the hiring process, said superintendent Sue Walker.

Teacher wins HIV education award

Veronica Cook, teacher at Shorewood High School, has won the 2006 Ryan White HIV Education Award.

The award is presented by the National Education Association’s Health Information Network to recognize excellence in educating young people about HIV/AIDS.

The award was presented to Cook at the 2006 NEA Representative Assembly in Orlando, Fla. She was recognized for mentoring and advising the Shorewood High School HIV/AIDS Peer Education Team (SHAPE).

Cook mentors 30-40 students who have expressed an interest in participating in HIV/AIDS education. At the completion of their training they provide peer education for their 1,800 classmates.

Cook also helps students create lesson plans that include a mandated state requirement for HIV/AIDS education, as well as their observance of World AIDS Day.

As Emma Kallaway, SHAPE co-president, stated in a release, “Her efforts go well beyond what is asked for from any educator in my area. Veronica Cook is warm and welcoming to teaching this controversial subject. Our HIV and AIDS peer education club would be lost without her.”
