Shorewood Big Band Dance
Dance the night away with the Shorewood Jazz Band at its Holiday Big Band Dance from 7:30-10:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15 in the Einstein Middle School Cafeteria, 19343 3rd Ave. NW.
The Einstein Middle School Jazz Band and the Shorewood Stage Band will join them. A dance instructor will give lessons for the first half-hour.
Tickets are available from Shorewood Jazz Band students and a limited amount of tickets will be available at the door. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students/seniors.
Proceeds will help pay for the Jazz Band’s upcoming trip and performance at the International Association of Jazz Educators Conference in New York City Jan. 10- 13.
Banquet helps Peruvians
A charity banquet will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 5 in the Shoreline Room at Shoreline Center to benefit Aldea Yanapay , an underprivileged school in Cusco, Peru.
About 75 children attend the school, a safe haven for the poverty-stricken youth of Cusco, said Theresa Leigh, a Shorecrest High School senior who’s putting on the event with Jessica Chung for their senior project.
Tickets are $10 for students before Dec. 20, $12 per adult before Dec. 20 and $15 for everyone after Dec. 20.
Sought: senior volunteers
The Power of One Senior Volunteer program is looking for new participants, retired and 55 years of age or older. The Power of One Volunteers can be found in nine Shoreline schools and is affiliated with the Shoreline/Lake Forest Park Senior Center and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.
Volunteer activities include assisting students with math, reading and writing skills, helping in school libraries, mentoring and tutoring.

Jazz band goes to New York
The Shorewood High School Jazz Band, under the direction of Paul Harshman, will be performing at the International Association of Jazz Educators Conference in New York City, Jan. 10-13 at the New York Hilton and the Sheraton Towers Hotels.
It’s the world’s largest jazz conference and features dozens of performances by the world’s top professional and student groups. A series of workshops, clinics, commission premieres, and research paper presentations are also featured during the four-day conference.
Some of the performers and clinicians that will be in attendance are: James Moody, Doc Severinsen, The Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band and more.
The Shorewood High School Jazz Band performs at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13 in the Hilton Grand Ballroom.
In recent years the band has won the 2004 Berklee College Jazz Festival in Boston, Mass., the 2005 University of North Texas Jazz Festival in Dallas, Texas and the 2006 Reno Jazz Festival. The Shorewood Jazz Band also was fourth in the 2005 Essentially Ellington Festival held in New York City.
