Olstad is named to SCC Board

Lake Forest Park City Councilmember Roger Olstad has been appointed the newest member of the Shoreline Community College Board of Trustees. Olstad’s five-year term began this month and ends Sept. 30, 2011.

Olstad was a science education professor at the University of Washington from 1964 to 1995. He has been a consultant to numerous local, state, national and international groups, including the Ford Foundation, the Shoreline School District and 20 other school districts, the Washington State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and more than 15 other state agencies and/or colleges and universities.

He replaced Jeff Lewis on the board.

SCC to expand training center

The Puget Sound Automobile Dealers Association, or PSADA, Foundation has presented $100,000 to Shoreline Community College to develop architectural plans for expansion of the college’s Automotive Training Center.

The State Board for Community and Technical Colleges has matched the donation, providing enough funding for the architectural firm, Group Mackenzie, to begin the design phase.

With the automotive industry across Washington state currently experiencing a significant shortfall of qualified technicians, regional new car dealers are also contributing to the fundraising efforts.

The program has outgrown the original 32,000 square foot training facility, with 24 service bays and millions of dollars in donated equipment, components and vehicles.

Over $4 million has been raised to date, two thirds by private donors. The Professional Automotive Training Center, built in 1992, is considered one of the top programs of its kind in the country.

Free meals for preschool children

A Place For Kids Child care, a child care center in Shoreline, is offering free meals to enrolled children at certain income levels as part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Child and Adult Care Food Program administered by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, or OSPI.

Meals will be made available to enrolled children at no separate charge without regard to race, color, national origin, gender, age or disability.

For information, call the school at 206-417-4865. The school is located at 919 NE 185th St.
