New vice president for Edmonds CC

Martin Cavalluzzi has been hired as Vice President for Instruction at Edmonds Community College, the second highest administrator reporting to the college president.

Cavalluzzi’s hire marks the start of the college’s initiative to be a hub of math, science and engineering education and math/science teacher preparation in the community. The college is committed to preparing students to complete bachelor’s degrees ready to enter in-demand fields in math and science.

Since 2001, Cavalluzzi has served as Dean of Science and Math at Seattle Central Community College. Previously, he was Associate Dean for Math and Science at Northwest Indian College in Bellingham. He has been a faculty member in biology departments since 1993 at Northwest Indian College, Oregon State University and The College of William and Mary in Virginia.

Dance Team wins competition

To top off their winning season, the Meadowdale High School Dance Team went to the WIAA State Dance/Drill competition in Yakima this March, competed in Class 4A for the first time and tied for first place, making them number one in the state.

The 17-member dance team have not only performed their jazz, kick, hip-hop, and famous “light show” in front of local audiences but also at Key Arena in Seattle at a SuperSonics basketball game during halftime. They were awarded the privilege by winning first place at the Sonics Dance competition.

The year is ending with eight seniors graduating and five new members joining. The 2005/2006 team members are: Megan Bosaw; captain, Nicole Olson; captain, Jasmine Craig; co-captain, Kaarin Olsen; co-captain, Lauren Costello, Alaina Githens, Lauren Falk, Maret Falk, Emily Getts, Marie Harb, Natalia Harb, Taryn Jones, Melia Lucero, Jamie Martin, Jill Rotset, Danielle Tarabochia, Leta Troka.

Students of the fourth quarter

North Sound Christian has announced its students of the fourth quarter.

Jacob Carson, seventh grader, is in the Navy Sea Cadet Corp Club. He’s won the Marksmanship-Sharp Shooter Ribbon and Boot Camp Ribbon. He volunteers at Christ the Rock Fellowship.

Mark Evan Layman, sophomore, is in National Honor Society and student council as sophomore class treasurer. He is leaving in August for Thailand as a missionary with his parents.

Heather Thorsteinson, sophomore, has a GPA of 3.96 and is in National Honor Society and student council. She is sophomore class president and lettered in academics and drama.

Elisabeth Tissell, eighth grader, has a 4.0 GPA and is eighth grade class secretary. She’s been awarded with the Honor Roll, Citizenship Award, President’s Academic Award and Queen Esther Award.

Alexandra Vaughn, sophomore, has a GPA of 3.9. She won the Presidential Award for academic excellence and plays basketball and volleyball for her school. She volunteers with Sunday school and a retirement home.

Murata wins Excellence award

Edmonds Community College’s trustees awarded Business Management Instructor Liz Murata the Excellence in Education award at the college’s 39th annual commencement ceremony.

The award honors individuals who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to education and the college mission. Murata developed courses in management, communications and technology and taught business classes such as Principles of Marketing, Time Management and E-Marketing. She was one of the first instructors at the college to teach online classes. She retired in June after 21 years of service.
