Adult education orientations held
Orientations will be held for GED and Adult Basic Education classes at Edmonds Community College. For students who enroll, the classes are $25 per quarter.
At orientation, prospective students can get program information and take reading and math assessments. Then they meet one-on-one with an adviser to register for classes.
Orientation dates are:
• 10 a.m.–noon, Aug. 22 and 23
• 6-8 p.m., Aug. 29 and 30
• 1:30-3:30 p.m., Sept. 5 and 6
• 6-8 p.m., Sept. 12 and 13
• 5:30-8:30 p.m., Sept. 26 and 27

Latino literacy programs available
The Family Support Center of South Snohomish County, in partnership with Alderwood Middle School and the Sno-Isle Library System, is presenting an eight-week program for local Latino families designed to encourage literacy through a variety of arts and crafts activities, guest speakers and other resources.
The Latino Reading Club, which meets Monday evenings from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Lynnwood Library, encourages local Latino youth to develop reading and writing skills.
“Para Familias Latinas,” which meets Saturdays from 2-3 p.m. at the Lynnwood Library, encourages family literacy for Spanish-speaking families with small children.

Child care registration
Parents can register now for fall child care through the Shoreline/ South County Family YMCA. Care starts Sept. 5 for the Edmonds School District and Sept. 6 for the Shoreline School District.

E-W graduate wins scholarship
Irene Yiu, who graduated from Edmonds-Woodway High School this spring, earned a Comcast Leaders and Achievers grant of $1,000.
Yiu graduated with a 4.0 GPA and plans to attend Georgetown University in the fall. She volunteers as a tutor at the Everett Interfaith Church and as a pianist for Grace Evangelical Church.
EdCC board member honored
Edmonds Community College Foundation board member Vaughn Sherman received the Benefactor of the Year award for the Northwest region of the Council for Resource Development, a professional organization devoted to fundraising at two-year colleges.
Sherman was honored Aug. 2 at the regional meeting in Seattle and will also be recognized at the group’s national meeting in November in Washington, D.C.
