Learn to tutor young readers
Powerful Partners, a volunteer program in the Edmonds School District, will offer a free volunteer tutor training Aug. 22-23 for anyone interested in helping a child learn to read.
Volunteers are required to attend both days. The training runs from 9 a.m. to noon at Meadowdale Elementary, 6505 168th St. SW in Lynnwood.
The training teaches how to be a successful school volunteer, how to teach reading and how to work one-on-one with a child. It also features a practice session with elementary students.
Preregistration is required: call Chris Hansen at 425-431-7155.
Powerful Partners is a coalition of five schools: Beverly, Edmonds, Lynndale, Meadowdale, and Seaview Elementary.

Students build for hurricane victims
Edmonds Community College students with Habitat for Humanity of Snohomish County will participate in Operation Home Delivery, building and shipping a home to Louisiana for Hurricane Katrina victims Aug. 19.
The building begins in warehouse space provided by King County on the Brightwater treatment plant site in Woodinville. In eight hours, about 20 volunteers will frame a three-bedroom home to be sent to the Bayou Area Habitat for Humanity affiliate in Thibodaux, La.
The project was funded by a $75,000 grant from Habitat for Humanity International.
The next Habitat for Humanity Cornerstone training will be at the Brightwater warehouse in September. Community members are invited to participate and learn how to build a Habitat for Humanity home. Call 425-640-1190 for information.
