‘Brain Camps’ start next month

“Brain Camps” for secondary school students, offered by Study Dynamics, LLC, will run throughout August. The sessions focus on improving organization, listening, note taking, memory and more.

WSU grants two scholarships

Two Lynnwood students have won scholarships from Western Washington University for the 2006-2007 academic year.

Erik Bailey, a Kings High School graduate, won a one-year $500 Multicultural Achievement Program Scholarship. Stephen Steward won a $3,000 President’s Scholarship, a $500 WWU Merit Scholarship and a $500 WF Distinguished Scholar Award. Steward attended Meadowdale High School.

Local graduates get scholarships

The League of Women Voters of Snohomish County gave three $1,000 scholarships to three area high school seniors this year.

Jessica Perkins, 2006 graduate of Mountlake Terrace High School, born and reared in Germany until age nine, has been very active in the school’s Link Crew, helping freshmen get used to high school more quickly and served on Planned Parenthood of Western Washington’s Teen Council. She will be attending Spelman College this fall majoring in political science, possibly with law school and a career in politics later.

Carly Clement is a 2006 graduate of Henry M. Jackson High School in Mill Creek. Tavis Dickerson-Young is a 2006 graduate of Mariner High School in Everett.

ECC gives out 125 scholarships

In 2006-07, more than 125 students will benefit from Edmonds Community College Foundation scholarships. The Foundation awarded $100,875 in scholarships from $250 to $2,000.

The Foundation also funded 28 projects on campus with $50,000 in grants to enhance college programs from horticulture to culinary arts, fund child care and tuition waivers for low-income students and provide educational activities including business workshops for artists, a jazz festival, a conference on feminism and diversity and information sessions.

276 businesses, organizations and individuals contributed to the Foundation’s auction this spring, which raised more than $170,000 to support Edmonds Community College faculty, staff and students.

Sponsors will also support the Foundation at its upcoming golf tournament Sept. 8 at Harbour Pointe Golf Club in Mukilteo. For information, call Special Events Coordinator Lorrie Gomes at 425-640-1512.

New scholarship available

The Banfield Charitable Trust is offering the Campbell Family Scholarship for the first time this year. The application deadline is Aug. 11.

The scholarship awards funding for one academic year of undergraduate tuition to students. Decisions will be based on academics, character and the applicant’s desire to improve the lives of pets. Demonstration of financial need is not required, but may be taken into account.

Banfield Charitable Trust, a non-profit, provides preventive care to animals, childhood education about caring for pets, veterinary education programs and programs based on the family-pet bond.

Applicants must be graduated from or about to graduate from high school or its equivalent, or be a student at an accredited college, junior college, university or other educational institution.
