‘Radium Girls’ opens at Shorecrest

Shorecrest High School will present the true story of “Radium Girls,” opening Nov. 15 at the Shorecrest Performing Arts Center.

This is the first production for Andy Kidd, the new drama teacher at Shorecrest, who replaced long-time drama teacher Linda Johnson this fall.

In 1926, radium was the cure for everything, including back pain, headaches and cancer.

Radium made another hit in the 1920s – luminous watches. Dial painters made the watches, but one after another the painters began to get sick with a mysterious disease and died.

When the community begins to ask questions, all hands point to the U.S. Radium Corporation, led by president Arthur Roeder, who refuses to believe it’s the company’s fault. Grace Fryer, a dial painter, goes to court against Roeder and U.S. Radium. As tensions rise Grace fights for her job and life.

The play opens at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 15, with additional performances at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 16, 17, 20 and 21 and 2 p.m. Nov. 18 at the Shorecrest Performing Arts Center, 15343 25th Ave. NE.

Tickets are on sale at Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park Towne Centre or by sending e-mail to sc.tickets@shorelineschools.org for reservations.

Breakfast club students of month

The Shoreline Breakfast Rotary Club has named its October students of the month: Molly Gasperini and Allison Sherris of Shorewood High School.

Each month the Breakfast Rotary honors students from a different department at Shorewood. Both were chosen by Shorewood’s English department and previously chosen as outstanding students by the National Council of Teachers of English.

Gasperini has acted as a stage manager for Shorewood plays for three years and the Thespian troupe stage manager for two years.

“Molly takes her job seriously. She is kind but firm in communicating with the students she supervises. She uses her extensive literary interpretation skills along with her excellent people skills to be one of the best stage managers I have ever worked with at the school or professional level,” said Barb Lachman, drama and English teacher at Shorewood.

Gasperini is considering several college choices and is interested in biology, chemistry, humanities or technical theater.

As for Sherris, she maintains a rigorous academic schedule and takes weekly lessons for piano and cello.

She was selected as Outstanding Musician for the Concert Orchestra in 2005 and Outstanding Musician for the Symphony Orchestra in 2006.

“Allison is as adept at writing as she is in oral analysis,” said Bev Hastig, English department chair at Shorewood. “She is clear, sophisticated with her analysis and extremely talented at using specific support to enhance her arguments. She understands her writing process and enjoys writing.”

Sherris is considering liberal arts colleges and is interested in studying humanities, science, or math.

Shorewood Drill/Dance competition

The award winning Shorewood High School Drill Team is hosting its annual Drill and Dance Competition at 1 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Shorewood gym. Up to 20 drill and dance teams will compete, providing an afternoon of performances.
