Public invited to property hearing

A public hearing about the sale of the old Woodway Elementary property will be held at the Edmonds School District Board meeting on April 25. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Education Services Center, 20420 68th Ave. W.

The district is selling the property, which includes nearly 11 acres. It received 11 bids for the land, including one from the city of Edmonds. Neighborhood groups have been active in pushing the city and district to preserve the land for public use.

Cooking contest offers prizes

April 25 is the deadline for high school students to submit entries for a cooking contest with prizes. The contest is sponsored by Glacéau, makers of “vitaminwater” and other water products.

Students are asked to submit recipes for a nutrient-rich school cafeteria lunch, including a main course and healthy desert. The entrants with the best recipes will be invited to present them to judges May 8 at Edmonds-Woodway High School.

Each semi-finalist wins $5,000 cash for their school to promote healthy eating, as well as free vitaminwater for a year. One participant will go on to the next round of competition. Those who get to the finals in New York City will compete for the grand prize: a college scholarship of up to $100,000. Entries are being accepted at www.freelunchmoney.com.

Day of Silence at Mountlake Terrace

The Gay-Straight Alliance club at Mountlake Terrace High School has organized a day of silence April 26. Part of a national event, at least 300 of 1500 students at the school have agreed to participate, said Kelli Caceres, the club’s president.

The event protests discrimination, harassment and abuse of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students.

Participants will not talk during the school day, will wear pink triangles and pass out cards describing what they are doing. After school there will be a “Breaking the Silence” gathering where participants can discuss their experiences.

Business program gives experience

Over 80 Edmonds School District high school students completed a week- long intensive business leadership program last month at Edmonds Community College. Lynnwood High School, Meadowdale High School, Mountlake Terrace High School, Edmonds Home School Resource Center and Scriber Lake High School participated.

Students also participated in “Biz Sim.” Students formed model companies and spent a week making decisions on stock, product development, profit and loss and marketing and advertising. The decisions made throughout the week determined the company’s success. Seven student companies competed.
