Krell earns Rotary Club scholarship

Archbishop Murphy High School senior Rachel Krell was presented the Mill Creek Rotary Club’s Tokyo Homes Scholarship of $2,000 over four years on May 31.

Krell is an honor student with a 3.9 GPA, a member of the National Honor Society and attended the National Youth Leadership Forum at UCLA last year. The Mill Creek Rotary also recognized her with the Student of the Month Award last November.

Krell excelled on the soccer field and the track teams at Archbishop Murphy. She was named captain of the soccer team her senior year. The team placed second in the WIAA 2A state championships.

She serves her school and community as a volunteer for local food banks and has traveled to Mexico to work in an orphanage. She will attend the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma this fall.

District working on school boundaries

A committee looking at elementary attendance boundary changes in Everett School District’s south end will continue to hone its proposal.

At a public hearing this month, 150 parents commented on a preliminary plan that would shift more than 1,000 students from one school to another in 2007, when a seventh elementary opens in the area.

Many parents came from a portion of Cedar Wood Elementary School and were upset that their children would switch to Penny Creek.

The committee will meet Aug. 16 to craft a final recommendation for Superintendent Carol Whitehead before the school board’s Aug. 21 meeting.
