Four seeking

appointment to board

Four candidates have applied to fill the vacancy left when Edmonds School District Board member Bruce Williams resigned in September.

The school board will interview the candidates beginning at 6 p.m. Oct. 30 and could name the new school board member Nov. 13.

The candidates are Darrol Haug, a long-time volunteer in Edmonds schools; Roger “Cowboy” Wilson, a past school board candidate; Susan Phillips, a part-time instructor at Edmonds Community College who has served on district planning and levy committees; and Bob Ledford, a chief financial officer for a construction company whose father is a former district assistant superintendent.

The term for the District 4 director seat runs through 2009. District 4 covers the upper southwest portion of the Edmonds School District.

The fundraiser will open its doors at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2 at the school’s Great Hall, 6002 168th St. SW in Lynnwood. Games begin at 6:30 p.m.

The public is invited. Cost is $6. Pizza, pop and raffle tickets sold separately. There will be lots of prizes.

MLTHS benefit

raises over $1,900

Mountlake Terrace High School’s benefit concert Oct. 11 for the Central Asia Institute raised over $1900 for the institute, which supports education and literacy, especially for girls, in the remote mountain regions of Central Asia. The concert also gathered 175 food items for the Concern for Neighbors food bank in Mountlake Terrace.

The concert featured the award-winning Jazz Ensemble 1 and Dynamics Vocal Jazz Ensemble, orchestras, and other music groups.

For the past three years, the benefit concert has been for non-profits associated with music or education, and has collected food for the food bank.‑

Local student is aerospace scholar

Joseph Hoff of Mountlake Terrace High School has graduated from the Washington Aerospace Scholars program. He is among 95 students from across the state who qualified for the Washington Aerospace Scholars Summer Residency program.

To qualify, Hoff spent six months studying online through a NASA-designed program. He was selected to attend a residency hosted by The Museum of Flight this summer.

In his residency, Hoff worked with other students on the design of a human mission to Mars, guided by professional engineers, scientists, university students and certificated teachers.

Hoff and the other students also participated in model rocket design, construction and launch; lander design, construction and deployment; rover design, construction and obstacle course competition and payload lofting.

Washington Aerospace Scholars is an educational program for high school juniors from across Washington State. The program emphasizes science, technology, engineering and math and encourages students to consider careers in these fields.
