Teachers invited to enroll in course

Teachers in all districts are invited to “Get a HANDLE on Neurodevelopmental Differences: an Introduction to a Systems Approach,” a 12-hour comprehensive course that teaches about the root causes of dysfunctions, including attentional disorders, brain injury and learning disabilities.

The class will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. March 26 at The HANDLE Institute, Casey Family Building, 1300 Dexter Ave. N., Seattle, first floor conference room. Preregistration is required. Call 206-204-6000 or e-mail frontdesk@handle.org. The cost is $350. The course carries 12 continuing education clock hours for educators.

Li takes top honor for literature entry

Shorewood High School student Merry Li was awarded the top honor in Literature, Senior Division, for her entry, “Remarkable Dream?” in the Washington State PTA Reflections contest. Six other Shoreline students won Awards of Excellence for their entries.

Each student receiving an award will be called on stage at the WSPTA Reflections ceremony April 1 at the Highline Performing Arts Center where they will receive a medallion, ribbon and a certificate.

The theme for this year’s Reflections contest was “I Wonder Why” with categories in literature, musical composition, photography, film/video, choreography/dance and visual arts.

Shoreline students who received Awards of Excellence are:

• Julian Hendricks, Photography, Intermediate Division. She attends Meridian Park Elementary.

• Emma Brons, Photography, Middle/Junior Division. She attends Melvin G. Syre Elementary.

• Hannah Glesener, Photography, Senior Division. She attends Shorecrest High School.

• Rheanna Atendido, Literature, Intermediate Division. She attends Ridgecrest Elementary School.

• Kevin Yu, Literature, Middle/Junior Division. He attends North City Elementary.

• Brandon Fairbanks, Film/Video, Primary Division. He attends Shorewood High School.

All the state award winners’ artwork will be on display April 1 at the Highline Performing Arts Center from noon to 4 p.m. The Reflections ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. and end about 3:30 p.m. All are welcome to the free ceremony.

Students receive bioscience awards

Students from Shorecrest and Shorewood high schools received 24 bioscience awards at the Student Biotech Expo March 6 in Bellevue, including five first-place awards out of 12 categories.

The schools also won three second-place awards, three third-place awards, and 13 honorable mention awards.

About 300 high school students from around the Seattle area entered projects at the Student Biotech Expo, a unique science fair that draws entrants from biology, biotechnology and molecular biology classes. The expo promotes science literacy and allows students to present their work to each other and to the public.

Appreciation week is instituted

On March 20, at its regular meeting, the Shoreline Board of Directors instituted the annual Shoreline Public Schools Foundation Appreciation Week.

The Foundation’s mission is to enhance educational programs for Shoreline and Lake Forest Park students by establishing and maintaining a perpetual funding source and by increasing community involvement in schools.
