Students named band finalists

Fourteen students from Shoreline Public Schools were named finalists Feb. 11 in this year’s Sno-King Music Educator’s High School Solo and Ensemble Contest. Seventeen others were named alternates.

The students will represent Shoreline in the state competition April 28 and 29 at Central Washington University in Ellensburg where they will compete with winners from 22 other regional contests.

The WIAA/WMEA Solo and Ensemble Contest provides the opportunity for the finest Washington high-school music students to hear each other in a competitive situation.

The ensemble contest includes small and large ensembles in seven categories: woodwinds, brass, percussion, strings, women’s vocal, men’s vocal and mixed vocal. There were 29 solo categories, including seven woodwind categories, five brass, four percussion, four strings, six vocal, piano, guitar and harp.

Applications taken for scholarships

The following scholarships are available to local students:

• The Professional Photographers of Washington has announced its 2006 Student Photographer of the Year award.

First place will receive a $1,000 scholarship. The application deadline is April 15 and a winner will be announced in June.

• The Bob Drewel Human Services scholarship will award a maximum of $1,500.

Applicants must be high- school graduates and working or volunteering in the health and human services field in Snohomish County. It is not intended for high-school seniors or GED students.

Applicants must also be Washington residents and planning to attend or attending an accredited college or university and working toward a degree or certificate related to human services. Deadline is May 1. For applications please call Human Services Council of Snohomish County at 425-252-1244 or request an on-line application by e-mailing humansc@msn.com.

• The YMCA of Greater Seattle is accepting applications for college scholarships in the amount of $1,000 – $2,500 per school year. Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of leadership, participation in school, YMCA involvement, community activities, academic achievement, honors, financial need, work experience, statement of career and educational goals and recommendations. Applications are due April 1.

Nominate a special teacher for award

Looking for a way to honor that special teacher in your child’s life?

Nominate him or her for the “Teacher of the Year” award. The Teachers’ Insurance Plan is sponsoring the award. The state’s winning teacher receives $1,000 plus $500 for the teacher’s school. The winner of the national award will receive special honors, plus a $2,500 travel certificate. Nomination forms are available at www.teachers.com/toty and will be accepted until March 1. Winners will be announced at the end of the school year.

English program wins award

The Developmental English program at Shoreline Community College has been awarded an honorable mention in an awards program conducted by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).

The Diana Hacker TYCA Outstanding Programs in English Awards for Two-Year Teachers and Colleges are given annually and honor faculty and colleges for exemplary programs that enhance language learning, helping students to achieve their college, career, and personal goals. SCC was one of only four two-year colleges in the nation to receive the award. SCC’s program is being rewarded for its “originality, commitment and high standards,” developmental English instructor Dutch Henry said in a written release.

SCC’s program prepares students to think, read and write for college courses. The three courses, Critical Thinking in College and Life, Reading and Writing in the Academic Subjects, and Analytical Reading and Writing, integrate skill development with carefully chosen content.
