SCC Trustees elect new leaders

The Shoreline Community College Board of Trustees elected Jeff Lewis as its chair and Gidget Terpstra as its vice chair at the Oct. 13 meeting. Each individual will serve in these capacities for the next year.

Lewis is the president and CEO of Shoreline Bank and was appointed to be a trustee at SCC in October 2003. Terpstra works for the Shoreline School District as a family advocate at Parkwood Elementary and the homeless education liaison for the district, and she was appointed to the board in July 2004.

Input on South Woods sought

The Shoreline School District will hold a public hearing during the board’s regularly scheduled meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7 in the board room at the Shoreline Center. The purpose of the hearing is to gain input from the community on its land, often referred to as South Woods, located near the intersection of 25th Avenue NE and NE 150th Street, next to Shorecrest High School.

At its meeting Oct. 17, the school board passed a resolution to move ahead with its consideration of surplusing three acres of the property to sell to the city of Shoreline, for the purpose of a park. Currently, the school district and the Shoreline Water District jointly own the 15.59-acre parcel.

At the Shoreline City Council meeting July 11, council members decided to immediately move on three acres and designate additional funding to purchase the entire parcel at a later date. The school and water districts purchased the land in November 1997, and the school district obtained the funding for the initial purchase through a bond that voters approved in 1994. The money was earmarked for capital projects, so the revenue from the pending sale of these three acres would in turn also be used for capital projects, Superintendent Jim Welsh said.
