MTHS helps hurricane victims

The Mountlake Terrace High School Music Department will have a benefit concert for New Orleans musicians affected by Hurricane Katrina. The concert is at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20 in the MTHS Theater at 21801 44th Ave. W. in Mountlake Terrace. It will feature the award-winning Jazz Ensemble 1 and Chamber Winds, vocal ensembles and orchestras from MTHS. EdCC offers alumni awards

Edmonds Community College Foundation is looking for nominations of alumni who have gone on to do great things in their professional lives and have contributed to the community for its 2005 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award.

Recipients receive permanent recognition on campus and will be honored at a celebration in early 2006. Nominations are due by Nov. 4.

Since established in 1991, the college’s Distinguished Alumni award has been given to 32 people notable for academic success, professional achievement and community service. They include outstanding community leaders who are artists, attorneys, fire chiefs, musicians, educators, therapists, business owners and engineers.

Last year’s recipients were Sterling Sankey, Senior Vice President at Bank of America, Laura Sonmore, Mountlake Terrace City Council, and Stephen James Hyde, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Washington.

Mukilteo Academy constructs future

Mukilteo Academy, which now serves preschool through second grades, is building a new facility at 13000 Beverly Park Road, just north of Lake Serene. The building is set to be complete midway through 2006, and the schools hopes to move into the new building for the start of school next year. In addition, the private school plans to add third grade next fall and eventually expand to serve preschool through fifth grade. Event planning classes are online

Edmonds Community College offers event planning classes online for people who plan events as part of their jobs or are exploring a career in the hospitality industry. The classes are part of an event planning certificate that can be completed in less than a year.

The new online classes are Introduction to Hospitality, which covers the operations of the food and beverage, lodging and travel industry, and Event Coordination, which provides the logistics for planning various types of meetings and events including market and sales research.

The hospitality industry is one of the fastest areas of economic growth in Snohomish County. The industry employs 16,300 people in 1,220 businesses and the number of jobs is growing as towns add meeting and conference centers.
