Shorewood teacher rocks
A going-away concert for Shorewood High School English teacher Camille Bloom is set to take place at 7 p.m. Friday, June 17 in the Shorewood Auditorium. Advanced tickets are $5. She will perform in concert before taking a leave of absence to tour with her music and create curriculum for a new English course.
Part of the proceeds will be donated to the Emerald Queen Casino to be allocated toward integrating music in the core subject area classrooms.
Board discusses food, beverages
At its June 6 meeting, the Shoreline School Board approved a revised policy and procedure regarding food sold in competition with the federal school breakfast and lunch program. This change affects a la carte, student store, vending machine and on-site fund-raising fare. Each option now must contain no more than 35 percent of its calories from fat and no more than 35 percent of its weight from sugar.
The board also reviewed a proposed policy change concerning beverages served at school. In this recommendation, beverages must not have a high sugar content with no nutritional value. Items that will be allowed include low/non-fat milk, juice with a minimum of 50 percent fruit juice and no added sugars and diet or low/no-calorie soda pop. These changes would not affect beverage sales at evening and weekend events both on and off school sites. The board will vote on this recommendation at its June 20 meeting.
This proposal comes in the wake of a state Senate bill signed in March, 2004, which required schools to update their nutrition standards by this August.
