Back-to-school fair scheduled
Everyone is invited to the Edmonds School District’s annual Back-to-School Community Resource Fair from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 16 at Cedar Valley Community School, located at 19200 56th Ave. W.
The event features 50 free haircuts for students provided by 33rd Sunset Snip, Soma Salon and A Styling Studio on 173rd. Haircuts will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. The Snohomish Health District will provide an on-site immunization clinic. Parents need to bring their child’s shot records.
Other offerings include Headstart enrollment, school registration information, information about free school clothing, vision and hearing screening, Department of Social and Health Services, school lunch programs and various local social services. Page Ahead dishes up literacy support
On Aug. 18 Washington’s children will get a boost in their ability to read when restaurants, including Edmonds’ Engels Deli and Thai Cottage and Lynnwood’s Amante Pizza &Pasta donate a portion of their proceeds to Page Ahead Children’s Literacy Program. For the third consecutive year, supporters of literacy can put books in the hands of kids simply by going out to eat as part of Book Plates: Dishing Up Literacy.
For 15 years Page Ahead has been providing new books for at-risk children, helping parents to read with their children, and promoting community involvement in literacy.
EdCC students volunteer hours
Washington Campus Compact announced that Edmonds Community College students participating in the Students in Service AmeriCorps program have contributed 60,000 volunteer hours during the past year, performing community service valued at the equivalent of $1,044,600.
Ninety-four EdCC students participated in the program and will receive $165,100 worth of scholarships.
The Students in Service program is active at 21 universities and colleges in Washington and Idaho and between August 2004 and July 2005, a total of 656 students contributed 331,350 hours of service, valued at $5,724,542. According to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, the value of community service is based on an hourly rate of $17.41 in Washington state and $12.72 in Idaho per hour of service performed. For their service, the students will receive nearly $1 million in scholarships that can be used to cover student loans, tuition, or other education expenses.
The Students in Service program began its second year on Aug. 1. Funding for the program is provided by the Corporation for National and Community Service. More information is available at www.studentsinservice.org.
What’s new at EdCC this fall
Robotics, dance, catering, Northwest wines and information security are just some of the new classes and new certificate and degree programs available at Edmonds Community College this fall.

Here’s a closer look at the new line up:
• New degree: Robotics &Electronics —Learn to service and repair robots and devices such as microwave ovens, cars and traffic signals. Robotics skills are used in the military, law enforcement, manufacturing and consumer electronics. In Introduction to Robotics, this fall, students will build, test, program and troubleshoot a small-scale robot.
• New degree: Information Security — Learn about computer forensics, firewalls, risk analysis and layered security design training and prepare for work as a security or computer forensics analyst or information security manager, engineer or administrator. There’s also a new Linux Security certificate that prepares students to design, administer and implement security solutions for Linux hosts and servers.
• New certificate: Event Planning — Train for a career in convention, meeting and special event planning in the growing hospitality industry. Fall classes include Event Planning/Best Practices and Virtual Event Planning.
• New certificate: Catering —Gain entry-level kitchen skills and prepare for a career in catering or get ready to start a business, includes event planning skills.
• New class: Introduction to Northwest Wines, 9:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m., Saturdays, Sept. 24–Nov. 5. Learn about the wines of the Pacific Northwest. Topics include wine history and terminology, production, cellaring, food pairing, service and selection. Tasting each session. Must be 21 years of age or older to attend. The class costs $178.70.
• New class: Dance-musical theater, 2:50-5:20 p.m., Mondays, Sept. 19-Dec. 5. Learn the movements, steps and dance styles used in musical theater choreography. The class costs $138.70.
Local students make the grade
Dana Raugi of Woodway has been named to the 2004-05 Lawrence University dean’s list for maintaining a minimum 3.4 grade-point average. She is a 2002 graduate of Edmonds-Woodway High School.
Founded in 1847, Lawrence University is a leading national liberal arts college located in Appleton, Wis., with an associated conservatory of music.
Azusa Pacific University named a number of local residents to its spring 2005 dean’s list for achieving a grade-point average of 3.5 or better. Brier residents Luke Oines and Tia Resler and Edmonds resident Ryan Robinson each received the honor. Azusa Pacific is located near Los Angeles.
Music academy accepting for fall
The Academy of Music Northwest is currently holding open registration for the 2005-06 season until Sept. 7.
New student placements and auditions are scheduled to occur Sept. 10 at the Bellevue location: Bellevue Christian Church, 10808 SE 28th Street in Bellevue. Classes and some rehearsals begin Sept. 17.
Children age 3-10 will be placed by interview only. Children age 11-18 will be accepted and placed by audition and interview and include all classical instruments, piano, and voice.
