Candidate filings for school board

This week, July 25-29, all persons interested in filing to run for Shoreline School Board positions 2 and 3 must do so with King County. As of the Enterprise’s deadline, Shoreline resident David Wilson was the only person to file. He will run for Position 3, currently held by school board member Herb Bryce, who has indicated he will not run for re-election.

Lake Forest Park resident Debi Ehrlichman has filed with the Public Disclosure Commission for Position 2, but she had not filed with the county as of the Enterprise’s deadline. Patti Giboney, who currently fills Position 2, said she will not seek re-election.

Playground sale at Room 9 gym

The Room Nine Community School will have a rummage sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday, July 30 and 31 in the school’s gymnasium, 2800 NE 200th St. in Shoreline. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the school’s new playground. Contact Joe O’Malley at 206-306-8504 with any questions.

The Room Nine Community School is an applied learning program for grades K-8. Celebrating its 30th successful year in the Shoreline School District, the program thrives because of dedicated teachers, committed parental involvement and unique learning opportunities for students.

Summercollege for Seniors sizzles

Liven up those lazy days of summer for one week by exploring fascinating subjects guaranteed to broaden horizons at Summercollege for Seniors (50 and over), August 15-19 at Shoreline Community College. Summercollege features nearly 20 classes on a wide variety of topics from International Relations and Muslim Society, to the Power of Music, the Art of Ancient Greece, Donald Duck Gets Drafted, Internet Research and more.

Classes are scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day on the main campus of Shoreline Community College, 16101 Greenwood Avenue in Shoreline. Parking is free and easily accessible. The registration fee of $65 for 3 classes/day or $75 for 4 classes/day includes morning refreshments.

New resource for volunteers

The Gift of Giving Foundation is a local non-profit organization focused on bringing the excitement and reward of volunteering to Shoreline Public School students of all ages. This organization believes that every child should experience the joy that comes from helping others. The Gift of Giving Foundation offers volunteer information and opportunities that benefit both local and global communities and help young people develop valuable personal and life skills.

Children and families accumulating enough hours of service are eligible to receive the prestigious President’s Volunteer Service Award. High school seniors may be able to earn $5,000 in scholarship money for college or advanced education. State recognizes top graduates

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Terry Bergeson announced July 14 the names of 152 Washington graduating seniors selected as winners of the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship. Approximately 16 of the top graduates from each of Washington’s nine congressional districts will receive a scholarship worth $1,500 per year for four years of study at college.

This federally-funded scholarship is named for U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd, a long-time senator from West Virginia. Byrd created the scholarship as a way to recognize and award exceptionally able students who have demonstrated academic excellence in high school and show great promise of continued educational success in college and beyond.

Local recipients include: Thu Cung, Jackson High School; Bridgette Hannifin, Jackson; Channing Jones, Edmonds-Woodway High School; Sergey Krayev, Edmonds-Woodway; Robert Manhas, Jackson; Pooja Patel, Jackson; Philip Rodenbough, Shorewood High School; Maria Walters, Jackson; Chen Xie, Edmonds-Woodway; and Sam Zipper, Edmonds-Woodway.

Colleges recognize students’ grades

Megan Marie Haggerty of Shoreline was named to Gonzaga University’s president’s list for spring semester. To be given this honor, students must earn a 3.7 or higher grade-point average.
